Language Skills

Language skills represent your fluency at speaking, reading, and writing languages. Your rating measures this proficiency. All characters begin with rating 4 in one language skill chosen by the GM at character creation. Language skills are generally only required when your proficiency in communication differs greatly from another character’s proficiency; in other words, when the ratings between two characters’ language skills are at lest 3 ratings apart. While high ratings reflect eloquent communication ability, it may mean using words too advanced for low-rating characters to understand. Conversely, low-rating characters may be incapable of accurately expressing information, or do so in broken or crude language, that makes it difficult for someone accustomed to a language to understand. This applies to literature, as well.
Listed below are language skills that may be used in this game. While there are hundreds of other languages your character is allowed to learn, languages not on this list are very likely never to see use during gameplay. Those languages listed in bold, however, will be extremely common during this campaign and are recommended to players. All characters in this campaign will begin with rating 4 in English.
